What is Student Loan Forgiveness?

There are several ways that you can have your student loan debt forgiven by your loan agency. Certain types of forgiveness can be extended if you are employed as the following:

·         Teacher

·         Military

·         Child care provider

·         Your school closed

·         Work for the state or federal government

·         Nurse

·         Work for the Peace Corps (or ACTION)

Each of these professions can have part or all of their student loan debt forgiven. However, each profession has a set of criteria that must be met in order for the loan to be waived. For example, teachers must be teaching in certain subject areas, and must be working in impoverished or socio-challenged areas. Those in the military most often must be deployed in a high risk situation, while law enforcement officers or corrections officers must be employed in higher risk areas.

More Information:

After reviewing the chart that is offered at the above link, and you believe you qualify, the next step is to contact the loan servicer. If you aren’t sure who services your loan, most of them are listed at this link: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/understand/servicers

While your application is being approved, make sure to continue to make payments as very often loans that are already in default may not be considered for forgiveness.
